Socialism with a Northern Accent This books explores the rich radical heritage of the North of England and its relevance to a modern day left-of-centre regionalism. It re-examines some well-known movements, including Co-operation, Chartism and the radical reform movements of the early nineteenth century, as well as highlighting some of the more forgotten channels of socialist activity, including the Clarion movement, working-class education and local radical newspapers. The importance of an internationalist perspective is also stressed, from support for Irish freedom in the 1790s through to anti-slavery and the Spanish Civil War. The book will be available by April 2011 and will be launched at a series of events across the North. Expected price will be in the region of £10.
